Animation for the web

How animation is used on a website

Animations make very good adverts because they are constantly moving, A moving object  attracts the human eye better than a stationary one this is why animations are an idea choice when advertising online. On top of that animations have other uses on webpages, for example  on rollover buttons, this type of button will begin an animation when the mouse cursor moves over them, once again catching a users attention.

How animations are used in E-mail attachments

Animations are used in E-mails are used as ways of sending messaged via emails like birthday greeting or other celebratory events, they can also be used to advertise. The reasons for advertising via E-mail are the same as for a webpage (they attract an audiences attention).

This is an example of animation that may be sent via email.

Issues related to output devices (3rd party software)

Some forms of animation require third party software in order for them to be viewed, a prime example of this is Flash animations, Flash animations require a plug-in in order for them to be played. This means that the user must download a piece of software otherwise they can not view the animation.

This is an example of a Flash animation that would require a third party software to watch.

File Size

File size is a key issue that must be addressed when publishing animations on websites, this is because a website filled totally with animations will take a long time for a user to load on their computer, same goes for a very long animation on its own, this is why when companies create animated adverts they tend to keep the animations to a minimal but just enough to catch a users eye so that the user does not spend too long trying to load an advert on a side of a screen. Most animations used for advertising are animated gifs because they have one of the smallest file sizes and can put across a huge message in just a few images.

This is a Gif animation, this has a very small file size.

File Type

Each file type has its own traits that make them better dependent on the circumstance that they are being used in. For example a gif would be more useful for advertising because of its small size and fast loading speed. Whereas an animation used to send a personal message to someone may be done in Flash as that allows for much longer animations.
